Rochell Bishop

Arts and Entertainment Editor

Name: Rochell Bishop

Title: Interim features team leader/Local Assistant News Editor

Educational background: Graduated from Howard University with a bachelor of arts in broadcast journalism

Employer: The St. Paul Pioneer Press

Job Description: I currently oversee the arts and entertainment page. I select news and features that run on this page. I also shepherd the At Home section, selecting and editing news that would interest homeowners and builders.
As local news editor, I plan the local news section and help determine what stories are selected for the section and slot stories and layout pages for the section.

What do you like most about your job?
The wide variety of news we cover every day. I like the rush of being a part of breaking news and helping to serve our readers by helping to provide accurate well-told stories.

What are the most important skills and character traits you have to have to do that job well?
Organization is key. Being knowledgeable about what’s going on is important. Having writing and editing skills also are extremely important. And, being able to work with others in order to create better news packages is significant.

What are the biggest challenges of your job?
Selecting what you feel others will feel is important. We can’t squeeze everything in, and we can’t please everyone, but I try to do my best to bring diversity to the pages I oversee.

What advice do you have for young, aspiring journalists?
Work hard. Sleep when you’re old. And don’t use pens in cold weather, always have a pencil handy.
