A whole new world (almost): Why fanfiction is so amazing

I had been writing long before fanfiction came into my life. But sometimes it was so difficult to establish my own setting and characters, I would refuse to write for months because of it.

As any writer knows, it’s hard to create something as big as a story from scratch with no blueprint to help you. This is why fanfiction — or fanfics — are so easy to get into. In fact, it’s so easy, I wonder why more people don’t do it.

Fanfiction — or fan-made stories using popular fictional characters and celebrities that are often posted on the Internet — is a fun way to begin writing and learn what makes a good story. With fanfiction, the universe is already created, the characters are lovable and developed, and in some cases, the conflict fully engaged.

Now, I don’t remember how I actually got into fanfics, but I remember wanting to see if two characters from a show I enjoyed ended up together in a relationship. When I searched them, the first link was a story on FanFiction.net, which I had never heard of before. I shrugged and clicked on the link.

I was hooked after the first chapter. Hundreds of stories read and hundreds of hours unproductively spent, I’m still here, alive and well.

But it’s also helped me get started in writing. The pre-established worlds and characters make it easier to begin so you don’t stress yourself out when creating them from scratch. Also, we’re all friendly! Many people on FanFiction.net are willing and waiting to give you a helping hand.

There isn’t a show, book, movie, or anything else that doesn’t have a FanFiction.net page, so all your reading needs will be met. All you have to do is search and start writing.
