Census essay: How do you count?

This spring, as part of the national Census, every household in the United States is required to fill out a form reporting the names and backgrounds of every resident, even newborn babies, homeless people and non-citizens.

ThreeSixty wants to hear how middle- and high-school students in Minnesota see themselves and their place in America. In 200 words or less, describe who you are – your age, race, culture, class, gender, religion. Deadline: Friday March 12

Scientist says path to living dinosaurs starts with chickens

What came first the chicken or the egg? Neither, according to scientists. It could be dinosaurs came first.

Paleontologist John “Jack” Horner – the scientist who acted as a technical advisor on the “Jurassic Park” movies — is trying to prove chickens evolved from dinosaurs by reactivating dormant genes in chickens that would produce a long tail, no feathers and teeth. Census taps teens to spread the word

Monday, Feb. 8, 2010

A quick look around Minnesota’s state demographer’s office made clear that teens are a prime target for messages promoting next month’s national Census. Why else would the boxes of Census trinkets include Frisbees, lunch satchels and miniature basketballs?

Late last Friday, when ThreeSixty reporters Mariah Davis and Grace Pastoor sat down with State Demographer Tom Gillaspy, he explained that teens are valuable for informing parents – particularly immigrant parents – about the importance and confidentiality of the Census.

What can seem like an arcane topic is profoundly important. Hundreds of billions in federal funds are distributed based on Census numbers. So are seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. ... Read more >>
